· Always wear cleanup gloves with the nitrile (plastic) side on your palm.
· Look before you grab trash—pay attention to any sharp or unknown objects.
· Place sharp objects like glass shards in a solid container, like a glass jar, and dispose of them safely.
· If you come across hazardous materials like needles, check with your local hospital, municipality or county to find the best way to properly dispose of them.
· It’s never a bad idea to have a small first-aid kit on hand.
· Your kit will have all the basics you need! Gloves, trash bags, a face covering and a few extra bonus items.
· Don’t forget a reusable water bottle and snacks so you can stay hydrated and properly fueled.
· If you’re in a public park or trail network, this can be as easy as figuring out where the nearby public trash and recycling receptacles are located.
· If you’re cleaning an area without public trash receptacles, contact your local disposal company to find drop-off points in your area.
· Review your local recycling guidelines –Earth911 provides a location-based recycling search tool and the EPA has a guide for how to recycle common items.
There is no Wi-Fi on course and limited cell service. We recommend downloading the RunGo App and the course prior to arrival. More information on how to do this can be found here.

Dirt, Sweat & Beers isn’t a traditional in-person race--we aren’t all gathering at the same starting line at the same time. This event has an "open course" format, which is a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during a set event time period and in compliance with the local park rules. There are eight (8) Dirt, Sweat & Beers events throughout the region from June to November 2021: 5 in the Bay Area, 2 in the Sacramento area, and 1 in Reno. Each event includes a 5K Course and a 10K Course. So, there are 16 total courses you can run between now and November. And all the while, you’re encouraged to grab your DIY Cleanup Kit and help care for the places that let us run free.

Stewardship puts the “Dirt” in “Dirt, Sweat & Beers!” At REI, we believe that a life outdoors is a life well-lived, and we believe in protecting and caring for outdoor spaces. We suggest cleaning up the running trails, but you can also pick up trash in your neighborhood. Every little bit matters! You aren’t required to clean up, but it’s a great way to give back to the places that let us run free.
REI is committed to creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and welcomes all identities. With that in mind, we allow participants in our events to self-select registration categories based on how they identify, no questions asked. Our expectation is that all participants will help us maintain an environment of support and respect for one another. All categories, Women, Men, and Open Gender are eligible for the same prize packages.
Actually, no! Each course will be at least as long as the distance advertised, and in some cases might be just a little longer. For road races, the organizers can measure out an exact distance like a 5K or a 10K. But for a race like Dirt, Sweat & Beers, which is predominantly on trails, we have to do our best to work with the distances that the trails provide. Each course will indicate on the event page and its actual distance in the RunGo App, so that you know what to expect before heading out.
No, you don’t need to run the courses! You can hike, run, walk, plog or all of the above! We welcome all comfort levels and all paces. In fact, the “Overall 5K/10K Series Champions” for Dirt, Sweat & Beers aren’t based on speed-- they’re based on how many courses that person completed, regardless of pace.
Event gear will start to ship on June 15, 2021. After June 15, we will send out event gear and DIY Cleanup Kits weekly to everyone who recently registered, and packages ship from a NorCal-based facility. So once you register, it shouldn’t be long before you have your awesome race gear and/or cleanup supplies in hand.

--Surprises for taking part in the DIY Cleanup: While there is no official award for this category, there could be some surprises along the way to celebrate all the great work being done in our community!
The person with the fastest verifiable race route time on each course (5K Course and 10K Course) from each category (Man, Woman, Open) is that course’s Top Finisher! Manual time submissions are not eligible for Top Finisher prizes. For Dirt, Sweat & Beers official rules, visit here.
We will award the runner from each category who completes the highest number of different Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses. Repeating the same 5K or 10K course multiple times does not count towards this award. In the event of a tie within a given category, a random drawing from among the top participants will determine the winner. Manual submissions are not eligible for Overall 5K/10K Series Champion prizes. For Dirt, Sweat & Beers official rules, visit here.
